What is CIMIS?

CIMIS (Common Industry Material Identification Standards) is a cross-industry initiative to provide common identifiers and standard descriptions for commodity materials utilized in maintenance, operations, construction, and OEM activities. The lack of standard commodity identifiers has been a major constraint on the efficient expansion of both Electronic Commerce (EDI) and Automated Coding Technologies (bar coding), capabilities widely recognized in cost reduction efforts. While several single industry attempts have been undertaken to create standard identifiers, CIMIS is the first to utilize a consensus approach by the full supply chain and to coordinate its efforts with national and global standards bodies.
