The purpose of the Classification Work Group (CWG) is to develop and manage commodity and services classification standards for the oil and gas industry. They have been specifically aimed at providing:

• Classification and Template standards for Products, Materials and Services
• Best Practice Methodologies and assistance with the materials, data and management standards
• Liaison with UNSPSC on Oil and Gas related segments

Since its inception in 2001, PIDX members have collaborated to develop over 3,800 templates that are mapped the United Nations Standard Products and Services Code® (UNSPSC®) (version 10.051) as well as working with UNSPSC to develop segment 71 that specifies services for Mining and Oil & Gas.

PIDX TEMPLATES

PIDX product templates are free and openly available for download. New Template Recommendations, Recommended changes to existing templates, and Template search and download can be accessed via the following link: CatMaster

Registration is quick and simple and gives you instant access to search or download the templates. CatMaster provides access to create and maintain a set of product and service component templates with defined nomenclature and attributes to enable, in particular, the exchange of electronic information in a structured and consistent manner.

PIDX Templates specify information necessary to describe products and services following an internationally recognised taxonomy and methodology which includes: 

• Noun
• Modifier
• UNSPSC
• Definition
• Attributes

FUTURE PLANS

• Through 2009 the MDM Work Group is planning to upgrade the CatMaster tool to incorporate additional features. Allowing more companies to adopt PIDX standards to describe their products, materials and services.
• Enhancement to existing template base to include definition attributes and key recommended attributes by template.
• Review of ISO Standards for Classification, Definition, and Schema management for potential certification.
• Expansion of Master Data Management capabilities and offerings within the subcommittee.
• Expansion of and membership through communication, marketing and education of the importance of Master Data Management and Data Quality Management within member organizations.
